Push Button Start Systems Overview

For many years now, vehicles have been produced that do not use mechanical keys to unlock the doors or start the engine. Entry and vehicle starting is achieved using coded key fobs. The key fobs are part of the security system. Instead of inserting a mechanical key into a lock cylinder to start the engine, the driver simply applies the brakes and pushes a “start” button. This action is monitored by the security system. If the driver has the correct key fob with them, the controlling ECU will start the engine.
